Crew Member Reveals Depression In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised experts in different industries.
