A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
